Temples & Blue Grotto

The Temples & Blue Grotto Guided Tour starts with a stop at the magnificent Blue Grotto, so-called, because of the deep blue of the waters inside. Once here, you can take a boat trip along the dramatic cliffs of the south and well inside the Grotto itself.

Afterwards, the transport and your bi-lingual guide, will take you to visit the fishing villages of Marsaxlokk and Birzebbugia, where time seems to stop and tradition is more important than modern day commerce. This is an excellent opportunity to interact with people whose today everyday life is the same as it was almost a hundred years ago.

A lunch stop is included at another fishing village, Marsascala, which is now turning more into a tourist attraction.

In the afternoon, you will step back even more in time - literally thousands of years, when you visit the Tarxien Temples. You will walk into the largest, most elaborately embellished, 'Copper Age' temple in Malta. This complex was the richest repository of prehistoric art on the islands, untouched for thousands of years until its discovery in 1915.

Stepping back even more in time your next stop is Ghar Dalam (Cave of Darkness), one of the earliest sites used by Neolithic man, who crossed to the Maltese islands from Sicily around 5000BC. One of the most remarkable aspects of this cave's history is the discovery of thousands of fossilised animal bones, discovered in 1865, belonging to several extinct animal species such as dwarf elephants, brown bears, and giant swans. You can walk 80m into the cave, obviously aided by electric lighting, and actually see the layers of bone deposits. On display is also a fascinating collection of teeth, bones and interesting reconstructions showing the size of some extinct species.
