The three beautiful islands that make up the Maltese Archipelago - Malta, the largest, the little rock of history and romance; Gozo, the mythical isle of Calypso; and tiny Comino, famous for its Blue Lagoon - form a very special diving site at the heart of the blue Mediterranean.
Known throughout the international diving community as "The Jewel of the Med", the Maltese Islands have been one of the top diving destinations in the Mediterranean for a number of years.
The Maltese Islands are located in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, about 60 miles south of Sicily. It’s position in the heart of the Mediterranean shipping lanes has been a determining factor in shaping the islands’ 7,000 year long history, from which a large number of remains can be found underwater.
Whilst there has been a constant influx of divers flocking to Malta since the 1960s, the last few years have witnessed a tremendous increase in the number of people discovering the charms of this Mediterranean jewel and a repatriation of old timers.
The blue sea around the islands is abound with natural harbours, bays, sheltered creeks, drop offs and reefs, ranging in depth from 5 to 60 plus metres.
The charm of the islands, the modern facilities, the warmth of the locals, the historical and cultural heritage of Malta, and the ability of service providers to threat people as individuals instead of a statistic, have all contributed towards this phenomenon.
Whether you have the expertise to penetrate the bowels of an oil tanker, or the enthusiasm of reliving the history through the World War II relics, or are looking for optimal conditions to take your first breath underwater - at Location Malta we can accommodate your needs with the highest level of service delivery and personal attention.
Before You Dive
Before you loose yourself in Malta’s outstanding underwater topography and start exploring its lost treasures, its important to know about the various safety related issues, in order to made your experience in our islands not only fun but also safe.
Visiting divers should realise that there are certain regulations affecting sports diving in Malta. Most of these regulations are of concern to the diving schools. The regulations that affect individual divers is simply that each diver or student has to prove medical fitness, and be free from asthma, diabetes, bronchitis, etc.. This can be established by either bringing your own medical certificate, preferably in English, and indicating that you are suitably fit for diving activities, or to undertake a medical check in Malta. This is not an expensive proposition, costing in the region of $10 to $15.
Our selected partner offers accompanied diving under the responsibility of a qualified Malta Government recognised instructor, but should you prefer to have a suitably qualified diver, eg. PADI Advanced or CMAS, accompanying your group, s/he has to obtain the Malta Dive Permit, an instructor’s permit known as Card C, which we can help you obtain through our selected dive school. For this, all you need is a medical certificate, two passport-size photos and a diving logbook.
If you wish to practice the sport with similarly qualified divers, you will need a certificate which is equivalent to the CMAS/2 - a professional diver’s diploma.

Weather and Climate
One of the most common questions asked by our diving clients planning a trip to our shores is – what is the temperature at this or that time of the year? As you know they mean the sea temperature as divers rarely care what is going on above sea level. The sea is at its warmest in the months between June and October. The scorching summer sun has had time to warm it to 20 to 27 degrees Celcius. January to April are the coldest months with temperatures between 12 to 18 degrees Celcius.
A pleasant feature of the long summer sun is that the water stays warm well into December. After December, much to the amusement of you rufty tuff northern European divers, most of our clients dig out their dry suit until May.
