Kairouan, built to be the center of the new Moslem religion in the Maghreb, during the time of the Byzantine (670 BC), is the spiritual town of Tunisia. It is a place of Moslmen arts, including Arabesques, architectures, pottery and carpet making. It is the fourth holy city of the Moslem world, and a privileged place on account of its mosques such as "Okba", the Zaouia of Sidi saheb (the prophet's barber), and its famous Aghlabites pool (gigantic water tanks in the open air) - which you will all visit.
Kairouan was also an intellectual city, radiating on the whole Orient and Occident, as an academy for translation and reflection during the 9th century. It later became specialised in translations of medicine, astronomy, geometry, and arithmetic.
The programme includes visits to Okba Ibn Nafaa mosque, Aghlabite basins, vist of Barber's mausoleum, and a visit of the Souks (shoemakers, Jebbara quarter, weaver workshops and wool dealers).
